Administrative History | Alfred Edward Miller Mundy was the youngest of five children, and only surviving son, born to Alfred Miller Mundy and his wife Jane Hindmarsh. He inherited the Shipley estate, on the death of his father in 1877 and was known locally as 'the Squire'.
In 1873 Alfred Edward married Ellen Mary Palmer Morewood with whom he had one daughter, Evelyn Hester (1874-1947), who subsequently bacame Countess Annesley. The marriage ended in scandal when Ellen eloped with Henry Edward Chetwynd-Stapylton, Earl of Shrewsbury. The couple were divorced in 1881 and Ellen became Countess Shrewsbury the following year.
In 1883 Alfred Edward married Catherine Louisa Cradock Hartopp (1862-1935) with whom he had four children: Irene Frances (1884-1937), Godfrey Edward (1885-1949), Violet Winifred (1887-1942), and Esme Sybil (1888-1946).
He was Deputy Lieutenant to the Duke of Devonshire, and was High Sheriff of Derby in 1891. |
