Title[Estate] Map showing Haddon Grove, Over Haddon, parish of Bakewell

DescriptionThe map appears to be based on the Bakewell and Over Haddon Enclosure Plan of 1810 (see Q/RI/10), with additional enclosures of land since 1810 and including a number of buildings. The map has been date stamped by the Tithe Commissioners in March 1851, but is probable that this is the date they consulted the map as they do not appear to have commissioned it.

Therefore the map must have been produced after 1810 but before 1851.

Archivist NoteThis item had previously been described as a 'Copy tithe map for Haddon Grove in Over Haddon, parish of Bakewell'. However, the tithes in Bakewell (including Over Haddon) had been extinguished since 1771 (ref: JV Beckett and JE Heath, eds, Derbyshire Tithe Files 1836-50, p. lviii. It has been identified as being based on the enclosure plan as the plot references given are those on the enclosure plan, with letters added to show the further division of the original enclosures (i.e. 143 on the enclosure plan shown on this plan as 143a, 143b, 143c, etc.)

It is assumed that the plan was produced on behalf of a client of Messrs Brooke-Taylor (possibly the Duke of Rutland as there is a signature from someone at Haddon Hall). Unfortunately, it has not been possible to investigate this further as the most useful records to consult would be the Over and Nether Haddon Tithe Files at The National Archives (ref: IR 18/927) and estate records at Haddon Hall.
