Description
Thomas Knowles was born out of wedlock to Thomas Lea and a woman called Knowles. He first met his future wife when Ann Staley was his housekeeper. They had three children out of wedlock, John, Ann, and Sarah. Ann was pregnant at the time of their wedding with George, who went on to become a farmer at Elton. Folowing their marriage in 1809, they had two more children: Elizabeth who married Benjamin Stone; and Lydia who died in infancy. Thomas was killed suddenly in Portaway Mine. Ann, the widow of Thomas Knowles, died on 21st October 1843, and was buried at Elton.
John Staley lived in Elton until the age of 23. He then moving to Bakewell for approximately the next 30 years. Having then moving back to Elton, he became a Clerk of the Parish.
