DescriptionFrancis James Taylor was born in Bakewell on 20 Dec 1852. He died aged 62, leaving a son and a daughter. He was a widower, his wife having departed in 1901.

For many years he was Chairman of the Urban District Council. He was the senior partner in the firm of Messrs. Taylors, solicitors. In his early life he was a vigorous member of the Bakewell Cricket Club, and a member of the Bakewell Company of Vounteers. He was Colonel Sergeant of the Company prior to resignation in 1873. Later he reorganised the Bakewell Fire Brigade, being its Captain for many years.

He was a man of very strong religious views, and a warm supporter of every movement which he considered was for the improvement of the religious and social welfare of all with whom he came into contact. The Church of England Men's Society appealed greatly, with Mr. Taylor devoting much time to strengthening its branches through the Diocese of Southwell. Shortly before his death he was joint Honorary Diocesan Secretary with Rev H W L O'Rorke.

Latter in life he was also an active Sunday School teacher ay Over Haddon and frequently officiated in Over Haddon church in the absence of the Clergy. He also conducted services at in Sheldon and Ashford.

At the time of his death, Mr. Taylor also heldseveral honorary posts: secretary of the Bakewell Dispensary; treasurer to the Bakewell Branch of the British & Foreign Bible Society and other institutions. He was appointed clerk to the Income and Land Tax Comissioners for North Derbyshire in 1880, holding the position until his death.

He was steward of the Manor of Ashford and Mineral Courts, and latterly accepted the honorary post of Probation Officer at the request of the local justices.
