| Description | John Denman, an apothercary, married Elizabeth, daughter of Arthur Buxton of Bakewell. Their had eight children. Their eldest son, Joseph, went into the family business.
Their second son, Thomas, eventually became one of the Court Physicians. Although, with their father's death in 1752, Thomas assisted his brother in the practise of apothecary. In September 1754, Joseph became a medical student at St. George's Hospital, London.
In 1766, Thomas was appointed man-midwife to the Middlesex Hospital. He held this post until 1783, when he was the first to obtain the diploma of Licentiate in Midwifery instituted by the Royal College of Physicians.
Thomas married Elizabeth, daughter of Alexander Brodie of St. James's, Westminster in 1770. By the time he was 50, he had become one of the most distinguished of all british obstetricians. He died suddenly at his home in Mayfair on 26th November 1815. He was buried in St. James Church, Piccadilly. At an exhibition on 21st Jul 1933, the profession provided a tablet to commemorate the bicenteniary of his birth. The tablet was later placed in the Parish Church in Bakewell. Their only son, Thomas, was born 23rd February 1779. He was educated at Eton & St. John's College, Cambridge. Thomas was called to the Bar on 9th May 1806. He then became the Whig MP for Wareham from 1818 to 1820; and Nottingham 1820-26, and 1830-32. Upon the accession of George IV, the Queen Consort (Caroline) appointed Denman her Solicitor General. Thomas became Chief Justice of the Queen's Bench until his death in 1854. Between 1832 and 1850, his son, having become a barrister in 1833, became his associate. Thomas Denman was raised to the peerage as Lord Denman of Dovedale in 1834.
Thomas' son, also Thomas, (later Aitchison-Denman), Baron Denman of Dovedale, was born 30th July 1805. He was educated at Eton and matriculated at Brasenose College, Oxford on 17th May 1823. He was first married on 12th August 1829, at Lincoln, to Georgina, daughter of Reverend Thomas Roe. Georgina died on 25th Apr 1871 at Stony Middleton. Thomas' then married Marion, 1st daughter and coheir of James Aitchison of Alderton, on 10th October 1871 at Haddington. Thomas died of heart disease on 9th August 1894, at the King's Arms Hotel, Berwick, aged 89. He was later buried at Alderston. His Will was proved at £11, 831 gross. His widow died on 27th February 1902, at Alderston.
Thomas Denman was born 16th November 1874 in South Kensington. He was the great nephew & heir being 1st son & heir of Richard Denman. Thomas was educated at the Military College, Sandhurst. He became a Lieutenant in the Royal Scots Guards and fought in the South African War of 1900-01,and the European War of 1914-18. On 26th November 1903 he married Gertrude Mary, the only daughter of Sir Weetman Dickinson Pearson, 1st Baronet, at St. Margaret's Parish Church, Westminster.
