Derby and District Association for the Help and Protection of Girls
Administrative History
The Derby and Derbyshire Association for the Help and Protection of Girls was founded in February 1882 with Mrs Rowland Smith as its President. Originally a non-sectarian association it established a shelter for girls in Bridge Street, Derby for preventative cases, while another branch dealt with rescue cases. Among its early activities were a Clothing club and a Free Servants Registry. In 1943 the shelter moved from Gerald St to 10 Vernon Street later becoming a mother and baby home. It closed in 1958 and the associations income were transferred to the Diocesan Council for Social Responsibility in 1970 with a member of the committee sitting on the Council. The Association also ran a training school at 50 Bridge Street where girls learned domestic skills.
