TitleChurch Watercolours and Photographs
Date1820s- c1900
DescriptionVolumes containing water colours painted in the 1820s, with photographs added during the 1870s and 1880s. Dr Butler was Archdeacon of Derby, 1821-1836, and Bishop of Lichfield and Coventry, 1836-1839. The watercolours seem to have been sketched around 1823 by Philip Browne, who accompanied Butler on his visitations of Derbyshire churches. Details of the provenance of the watercolours can be found in a short series of correspondence at D4841/25/5. Most of the photographs included in the volumes are of a later date, appearing to date from the 1870s, many being included in Derbyshire Churches by J C Cox. Some of the photographs date from c1900. The volumes are arranged in order of deanery, although some items are out of place.
