Administrative History
There were marriage connections between the Howitt and Charlton families from the late seventeenth century. Thomas Howitt and his father William before him acted as agents for Thomas Broughton Charlton and Edward Miller Mundy at Heanor Colliery from 1778 to 1812.
The name Charlton appears in several generations of the Howitt family.
