Administrative History	The gas works in Staveley were being built in 1857 "by a company of £10 shareholders" according to White's Directory. By 1868 White lists Richard Swift as manager of the gas works. Kelly's Directory of 1881 refers to the Staveley Coke & Gas Light Co Ltd and the company appears in directories until 1928 but not in 1932.
Custodial History	The item was found in Staveley Library and accessioned in the Record Office in May 1997. Nothing further is known of its provenance.
