TitleLetters sent to Elsy Hall, later Norton, mainly from Norman Norton, until Norman was demobbed in 1946.
Date1939-1946
DescriptionElsy Hall lived in Derby. Norman's family lived in Bloxwich, Staffordshire but Norman was stationed in various parts of the country before being sent to Norway in 1945. He and Elsy met while Norman was stationed in Derby in 1941 and married in August 1942. During the 1939-1945 war Elsy worked for Trent Buses in Derby as a conductress.
The letters include references to Norman's wartime work, attitudes to the war and to American soldiers, entertainment especially films, difficulties of travelling and rationing, family matters, preparations for the wedding and plans for the future, as well personal thoughts. Norman wrote two or three times a week and Elsy wrote less often.
In many cases the letters can only dated to month and year by the postmark on the envelope.
