Administrative History
The Whitworth Institute was built in 1889 - 1890 by legatees of Sir Joseph Whitworth of Stancliffe Hall and maintained by them until handed over to trustees in 1898 in trust for the inhabitants of Darley Dale and district for educational and recreational purposes. It originally included a reading room and library, class, bath and billiard rooms and rooms which could be let to public and private bodies for their use. There were also recreation grounds and playing fields.
During the 1914-1918 War the Institute was an auxilary hospital for wounded soldiers and in the 1939-1945 War an RASC Training Unit.
