| Administrative History | The Bateman family, originally descended from William Bateman of South Wingfield [temp Richard II], were settled in Hartington by the mid-16th century.
William (d. c1601) and Hugh (1554-1612) were the second and third sons of Richard Bateman and Ellen Topleyes. Hugh, who built Hartington Hall in 1611, and his wife, Margaret Sleigh, had three sons and two daughters. Their second son, Robert, lived at Middleton and their eldest son, Richard, lived at Hartington. Hartington Hall ultimately descended to Richard Bateman (1718-1776) married Ann Soresby and secondly Catherine Fitzherbert. The eldest son of this second marriage was Richard Bateman (1757-1857) of Wheat Hall, JP, Deputy Lieutenant for Derby and Stafford, High Sheriff of Derby, barrister of Lincoln's Inn. Richard married Elizabeth Keelinge in 1791. Their eldest sons were (1) Richard Thomas Bateman of Hartington Hall, Morley and Stanley (1794-1853) who married Magdelena Willoughby and (2) Rev. John Bateman (1800-1882), who married Emily Shewell, and served as rector of East and West Leake, Nottinghamshire for 46 years.
Richard and Magdelena's eldest son, Hugh (1823-1860), inherited and later sold Hartington Hall. Their fifth and second surviving son, Thomas Keelinge (1831-1887), Captain of the Derby Militia inherited Morley Hall, which later passed to his only son Hugh Alleyne Sacheverell Bateman (1860-1896), lord of the manor of Morley.
John and Emily's second son, Horatio (1830-1903) was a solicitor in Derby. |
