Administrative History | The Glossop Public Assistance Institution was originally built by the Glossop Board of Guardians as the Union Workhouse. In 1930, the functions of the Poor Law Guardians were taken over by the Public Assistance Committee of the County Council. The North West area comprised the Rural District Council of Glossop Dale and Hayfield, Urban District Councils of New Mills and Chapel and the boroughs of Buxton and Glossop. This system continued until 1948 when the Poor Law was abolished by the National Assistance Act. |
