| Administrative History | Spondon National School was opened in 1839. It cost £700 and had accommodation for boys, girls and infants. In 1844, a school library was established and by 1857 about 140 children were attending regularly, each paying 2d [1p] per week. In 1887 the premises were extended at a cost of £1,000 so that a maximum of 600 children could be accommodated. By 1890, average attendance was 120 boys, 90 girls and 110 infants. After the discovery in 1890 of the dedication of the parish church to St Werburgh, this name became attached to the school as well. It became a public elementary school and subsequently a Church of England (Aided) Primary School. 1663-1998 |
