Archive CreatorHeanor Wesleyan, formerly United Methodist, Church
Administrative HistoryMethodism was introduced to Heanor in 1797 by a minister who walked from Nottingham and preached in the square on Hands Road.

The first Chapel erected in Heanor appeared on Tagg Hill in 1806. When these premises became too small, the Trustees purchased 1.380 square yards of land on Market Street for £138. The Wesleyan Chapel was erected in 1839 at a cost of £811. Singing was led by an orchestra before an organ was purchased. Early alterations to the interior included the addition of choir seats and vestries. A new pulpit was installed in 1951.

The old chapel on Tagg Hill continued as a Sunday School until further land, adjoining the Market Street site, was purchased in 1842 for a schoolroom. Although in 1904 the much larger Centenary Hall was built to house the Sunday School at a cost of £3,500.

The Market Street Church amalgamated with the Mount Street Church and the Heanor Free Church in September 1972. The Market Street site was rebuilt, financed by the sale of the Centenary Hall and site, the Park Street Church and also the Mount Street Church. It officially re-opened in September 1974.
Custodial HistoryThe records were deposited by Erewash Valley Methodist Circuit in March 1995.
