Long Eaton Derby Road Wesleyan Methodist Chapel
Administrative History
The Wesleyan Methodists first built a chapel in Long Eaton in 1831. When the Wesleyans split after 1849 the majority of the congregation became Wesleyan Reformers and continued to use the chapel. In 1857 the Wesleyan Reformers in Long Eaton became part of the United Methodist Free Church (ref D4158). The remaining Wesleyans used private houses as centres of worship until numbers grew sufficiently to build Central Wesleyan Church in the 1870s (ref D4163). A second Wesleyan congregation grew up around the Cross Street/Derby Road area in the 1880s, building a new church in 1904. In 1932 the Wesleyan Methodist Church joined the Primitive Methodist and United Methodist Churches to form the Methodist Church. In 1980 Derby Road Church and Bethel Chapel were united to form Christchurch Methodist Church.
Custodial History
These records were deposited in Derbyshire Record Office by Long Eaton Methodist Circuit at various dates since 1973. Some of the records were previously accessioned as part of the circuit records (ref D1213). They were reaccessioned in 1995.
