Description | Will of William Savile of Beeley, gent.; to be buried near his brother in the chancel of Beeley Church; to his son, John Savile, all the lands in Matlock, Darley, Monyash, Dudworth and North Lees, his son George Savile to surrender to John all the copyhold land in Matlock when he attains the age of 21; requests his wife to be satisfied with the rents from the land at North Lees, Monyash and the farm at Matlock now occupied by William Richards, in satisfaction of dower; to his daughter, Jane Savile, ?1,500 when she is 21 or 6 months after she marries, provided she marry with her mother?s consent; to John Savile also, that part of the house in Bakewell wherein John Feyy dwells with the remainder of a lease for the life of Lord Rutland, in Bakewell, of the farms formerly of William Gilbert and Roger Newton, and of a lease for 100 years upon Torr Closes at Darley; to his son George Savile, the reversion of Birchover which he purchased from the creditors of George Greaves, with request to his trustees to pay Henry Elves mortgage as soon as possible and take the assignment in George's name; to John Savile also ?500 when he is 21, to be raised from the profit of George?s land if his personal estate be insufficient; his trustees to apprentice John to some good trade when he is fit or to some able attorney in London; to George, all his silver plate when he is 21, his wife to have the use thereof in the meantime; to George, all the furniture in the blue and red chamber and great chamber and his Turkish carpet; to John, all the furniture in the pantry and blue chamber; to his daughter Jane, 4 of his largest pewter plates; requests his trustees, William Eyre of Holme, John Bullocke of Chatsworth, William Barker of Sheldon and Robert Moore of Haddon to take on the management of his estate on behalf of his wife and children, and to be recompensed for the same by his wife; his servant John Calvert to collect the estate rents and be guided by the trustees in applying them to his children?s best advantage; to George, 1300 lbs of his lead to pay off Mr Elwes mortgage at Birchover; John Calvert to live with his wife and children and be allowed ?20 a year by the trustees;his friend Mr William Lee, counsel at law, to be standing counsel for this children for which he is to be allowed 20s a year by the trustees; to his lord and master, John, Lord Roose, his grey gelding; to George, 60 broad pieces of gold and to John, 10 pieces, to be paid when 21; to his sister Gregge, ?20; to each of her children, John, William and Susanna Gregge, ?20; whereas his father, William Savile, devised to Elizabeth and Jane Wright, 20 nobles each, and whereas his mother Jane Savile, left to Elizabeth Wright ?6 13s 4d and his brother George Savile has augmented to Elizabeth ?1 13s 4d (to make he sum to ?15 a year) and to Jane ?3 6s 8d (to make her sum to ?10 a year), the said sums of ?15 and ?10 are to be paid from the lands, rents and profits at Brassington, for their lives with further bequest to his nieces, Elizabeth and Jane of ?20 each; to William Barker junior, William Dickens and Joseph Wright, his godsons, 20s each; to his trustees, 40s each to buy mourning rings; to each of his servants, 10s.; to the poor of Bakewell, ?10, to the poor of Brassington, ?10; to the poor of Beeley and Harwood ?3; to the poor of Monyash, ?4; to the poor of Flagg ?1; to the poor of Chelmorton 40s.; to the poor of Taddington and Priestcliff ?3; to the poor of Sheldon, 50s.; to the poor of Ashford, ?3; to the poor of Great and Little Longstone, ?3; to the poor of Hassop, Rowland and Calver, ?3; to the poor of Baslow, Bubnell, Curbar and Froggatt, ?4; to the poor of Edensor and Pilsley, ?4; to the poor of Great and Little Rowsley, 40s.; to the poor of Darley ?3; to the poor of Matlock, ?3; to the poor of Wensley, 40s; to the poor of Winster, ?3; to the poor of Elton, ?3; to the poor of Birchover ?3; to the poor of Stanton, 20s; to the poor of Youlgreave and Alport, ?3; to the poor of Middleton next Youlgreave, and Gratton 40s.; to the poor of Upper Haddon, 40s.; to his friends John Froggatt of Staveley Hay, Thomas Birley of Greenhill, Francis Buntinge, William James, Henry Wright, Richard Grant and Thomas Savile, 20s each to buy mourning rings; 1 Apr 1676 (photostat) (original in William Salt Library, Stafford, ref S D Pearson 852) |
