Archive CreatorWhittington Moor Methodist Church
Administrative HistoryThe first Methodist Church was the Primitive church on Sheffield Road opposite Shaw Street, built in 1840. It was used as a school room for many years. A new church was built in 1870 on Station Road, Whittington Moor with a school room on the opposite side of the road in 1904. These buildings were requisitioned by the British government in 1941 and the congregation amalgamated with the former Wesleyan congregation approximately 100 yards away on Sheffield Road.

There was a Wesleyan congregation in Whittington Moor from about c1810, but moved to Newbold Moor when the new chapel opened there c1840. A new Wesleyan church returned in 1872 and built a chapel on Sheffield Road. Nationally, the Primitive and Wesleyan churches merged in 1932. The former Primitive congregation on Station Road amalgamated with the former Wesleyan congregation on Sheffield Road in 1941 following the requisition of the former Primitive church by the British government.

In 1860, a Free Methodist chapel was built on Sheffield Road, although it was known as Duke Street. The building was demolished in 1904 and the congregation, now the United Methodist Free Church, moved to Albert Street, the church being known as St Johns Road.

As a result of the construction of the inner relief road, the Sheffield Road and St Johns Road churches united in 1982, worshipping in a new church on Scarsdale Road.
