Archive CreatorGeorge Bunting and sons of Matlock, shoemakers
Administrative HistoryGeorge Bunting and Sons was a family business of long-standing in Matlock. There is even a family tradition that a Bunting made shoes for Mary Queen of Scots for when she was held prisoner at Chatsworth in the late 16th century. The first reference in a trade directory to a Bunting engaged in boot and shoe making in Matlock comes in 1857 with Thomas Bunting. He is succeeded by George Bunting, who had premises at Dale Road from at least 1880. The business remained in operation until 1978, when the last shoe-making member of the family retired.
Custodial HistoryDonated to Derbyshire Record Office in 1992. Added to the catalogue as part of the FindersKeepers project by volunteer NGS.
