TitleS Laing at London, Brighton and South Coast, London Terminus
Date26 Dec 1854
DescriptionAnswered 21 January 1855. Has received letter of 9th with inclosure which certainly looks badly for Scott. Indeed, his violent attacks on Brydges after such a letter as he wrote in his praise look as if he were not to be trusted. Longsdon must exercise his own discretion whether he thinks the matter worth any formal investigation bearing in mind that as far as writer can judge here Mr Brydges does not require any such investigation to clear his character of such charges - while on the other hand his complete acquittal of them will not affect the question of the success or failure of his general management and the expediency with view to Company's interests of retaining his connection with it.
As regards Sir Allan Macnab, not only not opposed to payment of grant of £5000 but on contrary greatly annoyed that it has not been paid long ago. It was clearly understood by all parties here that it should be confirmed with English proxies and for that purpose writer thought it had been settled - much to their disappointment legal difficulties had caused delay. Can't remain a Director unless it is done. If meeting necessary call one specially for purpose but with command of large majority of English proxies shall think Directors might take responsibility of giving Sir A shares to extent of grant.
Think Sir Allan if conciliated on this point, satisfied that management of Great Western not in hands of parties personally obnoxious to him such as Brydges and Buchanan will be disposed to do anything which reasonable to support them.
