TitleReceived 21 July via steamer via New York, S Laing, London to W Longsdon esq, Hamilton, Canada West. Writer just returned from Belgium and only just received his letter of 8th
Date30 Jun 1854
DescriptionNext week writer will have seen Mr J B Smith, S W Buchanan etc and will write more fully. Writer sorry Longsdon finds parties so extreme that Sir A McN [Macnab] could not be retained without breaking up the board, but supposes he had no other alternative.
Much alarmed at amount of capital expenditure contemplated and hopes Longsdon will consult with Mr Conway before allowing Mr Brydges to do anything. They certainly manage matters much better in the United States. A great pity the parties at Hamilton have not kept on better terms with the Americans, and been guided by their advice. Writer's own impression more than ever that their fine prosperity will be spoiled by expenditure of capital unless they adopt very different system from what has prevailed.
Mr Watkin of Detroit goes out of the mail. Writer wishes Longsdon would see him and have some talk about the Oakland and Ottawa line. It would manifestly be great feeder for Great Western and great security for bringing traffic to Detriot.
Writer thinks they should do all they can to assist its constitution by any means short of funding capital - the one essential point now being to keep down their capital to least possible for next 2 or 3 years till they pay a good dividend. Writer recollects it will take £8,000 carriage per week to pay 6% on £3,500.000 and if they ever fall below an average of 6% the performance on the bonds.
