Title
C J Longsdon at Longstone to Aunt [E Longsdon]
Date
25 Feb 1853
Description
This last day of visit home has arrived. 4 months of pleasure must be ended with one day of grief. As old William Pidcock said yesterday "Ay that parting is a hard thing". Yesterday mournful pleasure of leavetaking amongst cottagers - kindness of some made writer's eyes watery. Often feel how inadequately writer can every repay kindness and attention of numerous friends.
Have packed all books writer gave him - commentaries, etc.
Father came from Derby yesterday - not at all well. Emma tolerably well. Mr Tomes left them for Birmingham this morning. Mr James Longsdon and family all well, other news of local health. Weather moderated considerably through still wintry. Wednesday's storms reminded writer of Western scenes.
Shall be at Mr Addison's on Sunday evening and leave again for Liverpool on Monday morning. Does she think she could manage to get that far? Shall be glad once more to see her - next meeting may not be until judgement day. [Christian reflections]
