Title
Ann Longsdon at Longsdon to William Longsdon per Pacific
Date
28 Mar 1827
Description
With account of James' death in tranquility, quiet Christian resignation. Account of will which surprised Mr Smithers etc account of own earlier conversation with her saying that it would probably be necessary for her to sell everything. Had broken entail so that it should never be in any person's power to say that he left an estate and nothing to pay his debts. Repeatedly said to her before and after marriage that they would be better off to sell up move away - only consideration that prevented him from doing so was estate having been so long in family and if recovered would make another effort to redeem estate for little Henry. She knew demands on him were large but no idea more than half what he told her. Heavy pecuniary difficulties under which always laboured soured his temper and shortened his life. Remind William of his comments on James' unwillingness to part with money and family's general thwarting and disapproving of James. Uncle John came almost every day. Found fault with everything he did. News of Henry. William's godson, sweet little fellow. Great mutual affection between father and son. Letter few days before death from Leech and Harrison asking £40 to be remitted immediately to his account. Meant to send it Monday or Tuesday. Great losses last year - dry season - Great fall in price of cattle. Money so scarce that he could not get in what people owed him must be his excuse for not sending money he remitted immediately to William's account. Meant to send it in a day or two but died first. Hopes William is coming to England this year. James hoped he would be kind to his widow and fatherless boy - not one kind word of enquiry or condolence from Mr Smithers - Has done all she can since entered family to keep peace.
