TitleJohn Longsdon, Manchester to James Longsdon
Date10 Dec 1818
DescriptionMuch obliged for kind letter of 9 of this month. with Bill for £78. Has written with copies of accounts this morning as Mr Shawcross was sending a parcel to Mr Mason - hopes letter reaches James at dinner time on Friday.
Peter doubtful about Christmas visit to Derbyshire but writer thinks James may consider accounts as good as settled on plan they are drawn out.
Glad James had a good Fair on Tuesday and all cattle sold. Evident enough nothing equals the well bred Lancashire long horned cattle, and writer thinks James is quite right in turning his attention to Penrith Fair again.
Mr & Mrs Addison pleased James has bought Broom's Cows and prefer waiting until she has calved to having the other James spoke of. Wishing her to be kept a month in Derbyshire if James arrange it and for her to come a fortnight before she calves. If James should have bought the other Mr A thinks here is not much risk in sending her to Salford market which is a Saturday and new calved cows or cows about to calve go well.
Wonders at James' dissatisfaction with newspaper report of Smithfield Market on 30 Nov which was said to be accidentally very full. Report on Friday 4 of this month showed advance on preceding Monday's prices.
Mr Addison's cow which came from Totley should calve about 4 April and he would like her wintered by James or Father. If James can do it he will pay all expenses. Please ask Father if inconvenient to James and mention it in his next letter. Person who brings Broome's could take this back. Thinks James can before he goes to Hallam.
Writer to go to Liverpool tomorrow; will enquire about Oil cake. Got James a nice piece of muslin and will send it with a lot of things for Mrs Barker next week.
Write today to Littlewood & Middleton - unless they pay money due to James at Christmas will institute legal proceedings.
