May it please your Worships, We the undersigned Inhabitants of this Borough observing with regret the public profanation of the Lords Day, in this Town, by exposing to sale almost all kinds of Commodities; by the keeping open of Public houses; by the frequent passage of Common stage Waggons; and other practices contrary to the Laws; beg to present our humble Petition to your Worships, praying that you will exert the authority reposed in you for supposing the above abuses, and enforcing a due observance of the Laws.
In numerous instances, we have discovered in Shopkeepers and others, not only a Readiness to acknowledge the impropriety of their conduct, but a willingness to discontinue the practice of selling on the Lords Day; if they could do it, without hazard to their Trade and injury to there families; but they want firmness to put their good wishes on Execution, while their neighbours are suffered to present an unfair Competition, by exposing their articles to sale on that Day.
To remove a powerful Temptation from the minds of the well disposed. To afford them a fair opportunity of doing their Duty, without the danger of injuring their families, and to impose due Restraints on those who may continue obstinately to offend in the above particulars, we humbly ^beg^ that your Worships will listen to our Prayer
