Administrative History
A brief was a royal mandate for a collection towards some deserving object. It was addressed to the parish incumbent who read it out in church and took a collection. The funds were handed over to an authorised collector, with the brief being returned, endorsed with the amount raised. It was known as either a Church Brief or a King’s Brief.
