Ernest Terah Hooley (1859-1947) was born in Long Eaton and earned a lasting reputation as company promoter, financial speculator and, ultimately, fraudster. He promoted companies such as Dunlop and Schweppes, became High Sheriff of Cambridgeshire but was twice jailed for fraud.
