Administrative History | Middleton Community Primary School was established following the sale of land to the Parish of Wirksworth for a school in February 1846 (see D2372/A/PI/21/1-2). An Evening Continuation School was opened in October 1893, around the same time as the school was extended (see D2372/A/PI/21/3). Prior to February 1911, children under 5 had been admitted but accommodation pressures led to a revised admission policy. It became a council school in 1939 and was known as Wirksworth (Middleton) Council School. In April 1941 pupils aged over 11 transferred to New Bridge Senior School in Wirksworth and Middleton by Wirksworth became a primary school. |
Custodial History | The records were deposited in November 1990 and July 2000. |
Archivist Note | Admin History field amended and expanded, previously it indicated that the school was opened in 1868 (presumably as this is the start of the earliest admission register). However, the records in D3435, D5288 and D2372 clearly indicate that the school was opened in 1846, and the admissions in 1868 show that some of the children listed had previously attended the Middleton school.
