Administrative History | Upon the death of Charles Harpur-Crewe in 1981 the new owner of Calke Abbey (built 1701-1703 for Sir John Harpur, 4th Baronet), Henry Harpur Crewe faced a capital transfer tax bill of £8 million. Following a campaign, led by 'SAVE Britain's Heritage' the government allowed Calke Abbey to be transferred into the custody of the National Trust. |
