| Administrative History | The Derbyshire CID had a slow evolution. In the early 20th century, a Detective Inspector was appointed at the county constabulary headquarters in St Mary's Gate, Derby to keep the county register of convicted persons and act as a liaison officer with the borough police forces. The West Riding constabulary was the first outside London to have its own CID, and in 1908, Derbyshire's Detective Inspector visited their headquarters in Wakefield to learn how to take fingerprints. He then trained staff at Derbyshire's divisional officer how to do so. By 1914 he had the assistance of a Detective Sergeant, later replaced by Detective Sergenats at Ilkeston and Chesterfield Division, and they would visit serious crime scenes in the county, although the detectives at this time had no formal training.
In January 1925, Superintendent Else, who had taught himself detective techniques, was given facilities to organise the County Record Office, with a clerk to assist. In March 1930, when the new headquarters at Iron Gate, Derby, were completed, they included accommodation for what was now known as the CID, whose staff comprised a Detective Inspecter, a Detective Sergeant and a Detective Constable, with Superintendent Else in an advisory capacity. The detectives received specific and regular training for their duties. |
