Archive CreatorDerby and South Derbyshire Coroner
Administrative HistoryUntil the late 1970s, there was a Coroner's Office for the time being Borough of Derby and another for the County Borough of Derby.

In July 2013, there was a change in coroner regulations. Previously files always started with ther number 1. Following this date they were filed using in computer-generated case number. As a result, from 2014 Inquests and Post Mortems were filed together, with no seperation in the types of cases recorded., unlike prior to the change.
Custodial HistoryThese records were deposited at Derbyshire Record Office in 1990 and 1993 and appear to consist solely of records from the County Borough of Derby.
ArrangementWhere inquest case papers all contain a typescript of the evidence, evidence objects have been disposed of. (PB - 10/05/2023)

Very few earlier records have survived for the Derbyshire Coroners. There are a small number of inquests between 1877 and 1890, see Q/SS/1/1-38. The Quarter Sessions collection also contains Coroners’ expense claims between 1754 and 1869, arranged by hundred and coroner, and often giving the place of inquest, name of victim, mileage and sometimes verdict, see Q/AF/8/1-41.

See also collection D6144 Rowbothams & Co. of Derby, solicitors which includes three expense ledgers kept by William and William Harvey Whiston when they were County Coroners between 1832 and 1916. The ledgers often include similar information to the expense claims under Q/AF/8.
