Administrative HistoryBerbice was colonised by the Dutch in 1627 and was ceded to the British in 1815. In 1831, it was merged with Essequibo and Demerara to form the colony of British Guiana [Guyana from 1966]. Winkel refers to the fact that the 'establishment' was Crown-owned.
