| Administrative History | Francis Leeke, 1st Earl of Scarsdale (1581-1655) was the son of Sir Francis Leke (d 1626). His father was created a baronet in 1611 and became Baron Deincourt of Sutton in 1624. The family's seat was Sutton Scarsdale Hall.
In the Civil War, Leeke was a Royalist; his house was besieged by Sir John Gell and he lost two sons at the Battle of Lansdowne. He was created Earl of Scarsdale in 1645. |
