Extract from "Motor Service in Derby", in The Country Illustrated, date unknown:
"Messrs Sanderson and Holmes Ltd... [are] one of the most efficient motor service depots in the whole of England. ... The firm's activities cover every conceivable branch of motor work except the actual building of engines and chassis; but they get very near to this, since they do a very large amount of first class body work, constructing bodies for high class chassis of all makes, particularly the Rolls. ... [London Road, Derby]... With a two-story works covering an area of nearly two acres, the firm has an excellent machine-tool plant at its disposal on the engineering side; staffed with highly skilled mechanics throughout, this branch is capable of undertaking repairs and overhauling work of every description, and many complicated jobs are entrusted to it. A special department is maintained for dealing with wing repairs; in these well equipped shops badly buckled wings are made new again by a species of mechanical magic. The expert sheet metal workers employed here also turn out new wings and panels for the bodies made in the firm's coachbuilding shops.
On the body building side Messrs Sanderson and Holmes' activities are equally comprehensive. The workshops are completely equipped with the latest machinery for producing bodies of every description in large quantities, and the work done ranges from omnibus and chars-a-bancs and lorry-bodies to the very best coach-work for Rolls-Royce and other chassis. The firm's reputation in the latter branch is fully equal to that of the best London houses, and large numbers of luxurious private cars at work in the Midlands today carry evidence of Messrs Sanderson and Holmes' craftmanship. As coachbuilders and repairs the firm carries extensive stocks of the necessary timbers and metals, as well as considerable quantities of best-quality plate glass for windscreens and windows.
The shops also turn out large numbers of the now well known S. and H. special all-weather side curtains and Cape hoods - comfort-giving devices which now enjoy a wide popularity. Practically anything wanted by the modern motorist can, in fact, be obtained from the London Road establishment, either as a product of Sanderson and Holmes workshops or from the extensive stocks of fittings and accessories carried by the firm in its showrooms.
The extent of the premises devoted to ordinary garage work is such that well over a hundred cars can be accommodated..."
