In 1803, Charles Holmes (1785-1835), second son of Charles Holmes of Lichfield (1753-1812), coach builder, moved to Derby and established a new coach works there. He was succeeded by three of his five surviving sons, Herbert Mountford (1815-1893), Alfred William (1817-1895) and Arthur East (1821-1888). It is these three that the majority of the family papers relate. |
