Title
Personal letter from Sir William Gell to Philip Gell
Date
c.1808
Description
Has searched whole of Duke of Portland's Burlington House stalls of penny ballads without success for the admired song of Lobsky and his ugly wife. Was yesterday at great water party at Brandenbourg House which ended by dining at the said house ...... and as he was to dine at the Princess of Wales's today at Kensington Palace, though it proper as a specimen of rising and falling in poetry to send for Jim Belcher to go to Astleys on his return down the river `as there can be nothing more picturesque than to pass at once from the society of a serene Highness to that of a serene boxer'. `Her Royal Highness eats and drinks so much that dinner will probably last till 4 in the morning.' `I must now proceed to my business which is that neither your Sarjeant nor Charles Mundy will present himself or give any account about my prostitutes.' `I have this day being lame finished my treatise on Galicia for Mr Canning and do not believe it will be of the least use to me.' `I have half an idea of going to assist Colonel Schill against the Dutch and Danes'
