The sketch plan is described in the Derbyshire Record Society's "A Catalogue of Local Maps of Derbyshire c.1528–1800" (compiled by Harold Nichols, revised by Mary Wiltshire assisted by Susan Woore, published 2012). The description reads as follows:
[Sketch plan of houses and crofts with frontages on 'The towne street of Hopton'. 16--]. Scale: scale not given [1:650]. Size: 39 x 30 cm. Materials: ink on watermarked paper, <a horn, No.315, in Churchill, recorded use 1623-1695, but the countermark HDTI is not listed>. Centred on: SK259532 Notes: west at top of sheet. Rough sketch showing crude representation of houses (rectangles with chimneys), except for 'John Gells' which is gabled: owners/tenants named including 'Stuffying': circular 'Town pound' noted in wide part of street, 'Hopton Town Pasture', north of road.
