| Administrative History | The original St. Matthew's Church was built in 1386 on the site of the modern church in the middle of the village. Little remains of the mediaeval church, which was taken down in 1817.
The Church was re-built, with the re-opening taking place on Easter Sunday 1818. A sermon was preached on the occasion by Rev Philip Gebb of Matlock. A collection in aid of Church funds raised £78-13s-6d.
Until 1837 Hayfield St Matthew was a parochial chapelry of Glossop parish, this parish now consisits of the village of Hayfield (the area formerly knwon as Great Hamlet), Kinder and Phoside. Until 1831 the chapelry also included Beard, Ollersett, Thornset and Whitle, which then became the parish of New Mills. In addition, Chinley, Bugsworth and Brownside formed a joint township within Hayfield, although Chinley was an extra-parochial liberty. Chinley, Bugsworth and Brownside were formed into a parish named Chinley with Bugsworth in 1915. Bugsworth is now known as Buxworth. |
