Administrative History
Sir Thomas Denman (1779-1854) had a prominent legal and political career in which he advocated for the abolition of the slave trade. In 1812, he inherited Stoney Middleton Hall, and in 1834 he was created Baron Denman of Dovedale. He was appointed Lord Chief Justice in 1832.
