| Description | made on the occasion of the mortgage of certain hereditaments by Mr George Bradley to Mr James Taylor, that he James Holmes Bradley of Birchover, parish Youlgreave, farmer, born at Winster 13 April 1800 had resided at Birchover for the last 9 years, maternal grandfather was James Holmes a native of Winster but who lived at Ashbourne as a joiner, then lived and died at Winster was possessed of some property (with detail of wife and children); grandfather’s property he knows as a messuage on the Bank in Winster in the occupation of Edward Salt with outbuildings; estate in liberty of Winster called Gallimore Piece containing about 42a and purchased from Mr Bright and Mr Gallimore; the messuage is now in the occupation of William Bateman and the Gallimore Piece, which lies in a ring fence on Winster Moor, in the occupation of several named persons; plot of land containing 15a 8p now in 3 parts and in the occupation of Widow Wild; parcel of pasture at Winster formerly an open pasture and called Winster Bank Pasture (numbered 14 in the Bank Pasture Award) allotted in respect of ten beast gates in the Pasture; is acquainted with “Buxtons Estates” which originally belonged to Elizabeth Buxton, two thirds of which belonged to grandfather James Holmes, the remaining third, which then belonged to Lord Scarsdale, was conveyed to grandmother Elizabeth Holmes after grandfather’s death, and this estate comprises 2 houses and a piece of land at or near Ashbourne and also several closes of land at Winster, and also a dwelling house at Winster with stable, garden, containing 3p and now in occupation of George Robinson, which he understands was built upon the site of a house in which Elizabeth Buxton formerly dwelt and was pulled down in grandfather’s time as being a “poor thatched old House”; describes Winster land i.e. part of the Buxton estate, with acreages, field names, tenants’ names, boundaries; the Ashbourne property was 2 messuages in St John Street and a piece of land in Offcote and Underwood (details given); also mentioned in grandfather’s will, 2 other closes in Winster, one being part of Kirkcroft north of Winster Hall, the other part of a field at the corner of the Winster and Newhave Road and Islington Lane.
