Administrative History | The Outram family were long associated with Alfreton and played a major part in Derbyshire’s industrial development. Joseph Outram (1732-1810) was a surveyor, engineer and ironmaster. He married as his second wife, Elizabeth Hodgkinson, daughter of Edmund Hodgkinson of Overton Hall. Their son, Benjamin, born in Alfreton in 1764 was a founder member of Benjamin Outram & Co in 1790, which became the Butterley Company in 1792. The company, whose headquarters were near Ripley, were to become major landowners, engineers, iron-founders, colliery owners and, eventually, brick manufacturers in Eastern Derbyshire.
