Administrative History | The property at 12 Market Place, Ashbourne was used as a printers and stationers business for nearly a century from 1836. Originally Dawson and Hobson, it was later run by John Hobson and then by Robert Hobson. In about 1860 Edward Bamford took over the business. The firm became Bamford and Henstock in 1894. From 1902 it was J H Henstock, later J H Henstock and Son. The business moved to St John's Street in 1935 where it remained until it closed in 1956. Joseph Henry Henstock (1869 - 1933) took over the business in 1902 and founded the Ashbourne Telegraph newspaper. A keen bird fancier, he also ran the Avian Press. His brother Frederick William Henstock (1874 - 1951) was editor and chief reporter on the newspaper. John Harold Henstock (1891 - 1974) succeeded his father Joseph but sold the business and newspaper in 1956. |
