Further information: The tribunal decision of 18 April 1951 refers to a 'hitherto athletic man' who has 'also suffered a considerable psychological upset.' According to a doctor's letter dated 2 April 1951 the claimant attended Etwall Rehabilitation Centre for 5 months. A handwritten letter to Mr Kitts from the NUM dated 28 March 1951 refers to a meeting at the Ripley Miners Welfare. There are 3 pages of handwritten notes referring to the claimant's 'physical abilities' as a gymnast and as a Physical Instructor. Since the accident he was 'only working on light work on the roads.' Details of the rehabilitation he attended is also included. Some notes in red on the medical reports 'detrimental to the claimant.' The claimant's grounds of appeal dated 5 March 1951 against the decision of 8 per cent on 22 February 1951 states 'any physical standard has been considerably lowered and I am not able to take part in social life as before.' Hospital notes included.
