Date1951
DescriptionDate of birth: 13/07/1882
Marital status: Not given
Address: 310 Nottingham Road, Ripley
Type of injury: Injury - hand
Description of accident: Hand caught in a coal grinding machine while cleaning it
Further information: Radage's grounds of appeal: 'I have had to cease work through this Accident and the damaged hand will not stretch far enough to […] pick up and grasp lumps of coal or Dirt [...] I think that two Acidents that will remain permanent are quite enough in one working life'. Radage wrote to Joseph Kitts April 1951 saying 'The injury to my left hand is no better than when I was awarded 30 per cent six months ago [...] This cold weather is an absolute knock out for me [...] my Hands, so cold they both go blue, no feeling in them, and to fasten or undo a Button or Stud is beyond me, as the Wife or my sons can verify' and in an undated letter wrote: 'I would like to mention to you the following Further Deficiencies, which I was not allowed to mention at the Derby Medical Board, because each time I treid to, I was at once told not to talk, and after a few of the most Savage sneaps I have ever had I gave over trying.' final letter of thanks starts 'Dear Joe' and says 'when I saw those shifty eyes, that are part and parcel of the Sheffielder [...] my spirits flagged [...] What set me up [...] was when I heard myself described as an assembler, a term I have never heard in connection with coal [...] these clever men do make mistakes. To say I am satisfied would be wrong [...] in the boards I have attended, the only one that has been thorough and fair was the first, these two men were both considerate and thorough'. After the signature was noted 'Joe Kitts Esq, There!'
