Further information: UNFINISHED ****Long history of knee trouble from February 1941 when both knees were injured. Letter to Mr Kitts, NUM Compensation Agent May 1948 includes: 'it is very necessary that I have an interview with you there is so much to explain, you yourself know what it is to be victimized. [...] I don't aim for part compensation, I'm in for a lump sum [...] what a wondeful thing this freedom from fear is, but I still fear for my bread and butter. [...] I could not Blackleg during strike'. Pencil note 'been in Union 44 years'. Local Appeal for Sickness Benefit found in favour of Pilkington 15 December 1950 at Chesterfield; notes included: 'He is very deaf indeed. Also War Injuries.' Medical Appeal Tribunal findings of December 1951 said: 'there is no reasonable probability of any deterioration in the appellant's condition, following the accident 3½ years ago'. Final letters in file January 1952 to Plilkintton state: 'I have been in touch with Mr. Belfitt in regard to finding you a job at the Markham Colliereis. He has promised to have a look round and see if he can find anything' and the reply 'I thank you very much for your very prompt work on my behalf also my wife sends her thanks, and for the way you spoke up at Nottm.'
