TitleMedical Appeal Tribunal case file for Thomas Henry Nicholas, aged 61, Timberman at Markham Main, relating to an Industrial Accident
Date1951
DescriptionDate of birth: 10/12/1891
Marital status: Married
Address: 8 The Avenue, Poolsbrook, Chesterfield
Type of injury: Injury - head
Description of accident: Setting a prop, coal came over, knocking prop out, steel prop hit him over the head and left side of face
Further information: Appeal against a 10 per cent assessment as stated by Nicholas: 'I have other losses of faculty, resulting from injury. As I still suffer from Persistent Head Pains, and also Numbness of Left side of Face […] these should be taken into consideration'. He wrote to NUM 'As requested by your Lady Clerk [...] The Lady asked me to try to get a certificate from my Doctor referring to Eye Injury, with same Accident, which is not mentioned in the correspondence'. Appeal adjourned on 4 April 1951 for hospital report to be obtained. The report indicates audiograms were performed for loss of hearing: 'a degree of deafness far more than one might expect from a man of his age' and 'he is really suffering from a post-contusional syndrome'. Further documentation dated 1953 relates to an appeal for Special Hardship Allowance; it was explained to Nicholas that as he had opted to take a weekly pension rather than a lump sum gratuity, when the allowance finished he was compelled to take the remainder of the gratuity. Earnings as a steel checker were compared to pre-accident earnings. Pencilled note on notification of hearing says 'Withdrawing appeal'.
