Description of accident: Strained back while lifting a full tram
Further information: Dutton strained his back on 15 September 1948 'whilst lifting full tram onto rails' according to an initial Medical Board report dated 15 February 1949. He was reassessed on 14 July 1949 and again on 19 January 1950, and was assessed at 20 per cent for 6 months, and 10 per cent for 12 months on 16 January 1951. A hospital report states his occupation as 'Coal-cutter' and among the notes dated 26 October 1948 it is stated that 'First trouble to back was severe strain when he fell while lifting a heavy lump of coal eleven years ago. He had a severe attack of left sciatica in 1942 which he attributed to anxiety.' Dutton appealed against the decision on 14 February 1951of 10 per cent for life on the grounds that 'the amount stated by the insurance officer namely £82 10 0 is not sufficient to compensate my 10 per cent disability for life.' The Tribunal upheld the decision of 10 per cent for life (final) on 18 April 1951. |
