Description of accident: Whilst lifting gate pans, strained his back
Further information: The claimant injured his back on 12 March 1951 whilst lifting gate pans. It was initially assessed at 'less than 20 per cent' on the Medical Board Report dated 26 July 1951. It states 'Spine. no deformity.' On 2 May 1951 a medical report states 'I/P has Poly arthritis of mild degree, affecting knee, shoulders, etc., [...] there is also evidence of premature senility. Personality inadequacy [...] is incapable of work.' The claimant's letter of appeal dated 21 August 1951 states 'when I get down it is a job to get up again, also it causes me to have black-outs when bending the pain affects me in my right hip, and cause me to have very bad headaches. When I have walked about 1/2 mile I am beat altogether and cannot carry on at all.' A handwritten note states 'Own Dr will not sign him off.' The decision of the Appeal Tribunal on 12 October 1951 assessed the loss of faculty at 20 per cent and states 'a disability arising from a sacro iliac strain which should decrease but is substantial for the time being[...]'
