Further information: Straw was awarded 5 per cent disablement assessment from October 1951 for life and this was upheld at appeal in 1951. In 1955 a further approach was made to the NUM and Straw was found to have bronchitis and myocardial degeneration additionally and a review under Section 40 was under consideration. Final letter to Pepper, West Hallam Branch Secretary states: 'this member might be suffering from pneumoconiosis. The appropriate way to deal with such cases is [...] to make application at the office of the Ministry of National Insurance'.
