Description	Date of birth: 03/05/1898 Marital status: Married Address: 8 Windmill Lane, Belper Type of injury: Injury - knee Description of accident: Slipped and wrenched right knee descending steps Further information: Arthritis in knees, so Tribunal was invited to consider whether the osteoarthritis developed befreore the accident and was made worse by it - or after the accident and directly attributable to it. Correspondence covers the period 1948-1951 but the final Medical Appeal assessment is missing. In December 1950 local Denby Branch NUM officer wrote to Joseph Kitts, Area Compensation Agent, requesting expeses for having travelled to London to appear before the Commissioner when he was 'successful in my appeal against the local area Minister of National Insurance'. Response to this letter expresses surprise that he had attended when a representative could have been arranged from the London office, and denying the travel claim. The Branch officer responded: 'I am wondering if you forgot that you turned tghis case over to me [...] with the words that Lees "hadn't a cat in hell's chance" [...] I was justified in going to London to represent Lees as he wanted no-one else' and in letter dated 2 January 1950 'the day in London including loss of work cost me nearly £4'.
